Annemarie Graupner

(1920-2004)

Annemarie Graupner was born in Bern in 1920. First she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Hermann Kaspar and Julius Hess. From 1950 onwards, the first textile formats and tapestries were created alongside small-format pictures. In 1953 she married the painter and draftsman Ernst Graupner. Annemarie Graupner died in Munich in 2004.

After moving to Germany, her artistic success turned out to be difficult, as many exhibition venues were closed to her as a woman. She was able to present her large tapestries for the first time at the annual exhibition in the Haus der Kunst in Munich. Collectors from home and abroad became aware of her and she received her first commissioned works. Her formal language developed through dealing with Cubism, but Graupner created her very own style. Her works move between representationalism and abstraction.
